‘My Feelings Look Funny’ – A Children’s Book for Social Change
Social discrimination is a learnt behaviour. My Major Design Project is a children’s book developed to address disability discrimination through early education and intervention from current social attitudes against the disabled community. This book aims to prevent disability discrimination by teaching children how to empathise with others and recognise that despite differences, everyone has the same emotional needs and should be treated as such. In exercising empathy, disability is re-humanised and familiarised to children as they learn how to celebrate individual diversity while embracing others. An inclusive resource, the book is a tactile, textile-based project, utilising different textured materials to portray emotions. The book is multisensory and highly interactive, ensuring it is engaging and inclusive for all readers and abilities. Additionally, this book is bilingual and combines Braille and English text.
