Newport Essentials | A Sustainable Brand
Each year, 500 million kilograms of clothing goes to landfill just from Australia. For my Major Design Project, I decided to help prevent such large quantities of clothing from going to landfill by upcycling second-hand clothes. I did this by purchasing garments from charity shops such as Vinnies and transforming them into new, trendy, stylish pieces. When surveying my target audience of young females, I discovered that eighty-four per cent of respondents donate their unwanted clothing but only forty per cent shop for themselves at charity shops. By upcycling clothes from charity shops, the new garments are another way to contribute to sustainable fashion. The pin-striped blazer set used to be a men’s oversized blazer, which I transformed into a stylish two-piece set. Any clothing not sold from a charity shop eventually ends up in landfill. Therefore, transforming the clothing is a sustainable clothing option.
